SEHLING, JOSEF A. (1710-1756)

Josef Antonín Sehling (born January 7, 1710 at Touzim and died September 19, 1756 in Prague) was a Bohemian composer. Sehling since 1737 was a violinist at St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague, from 1740 choirmaster at the Church of Geneva and also deputy choirmaster at St. Vitus Cathedral. Besides a large number of arias, fairs, motets and offertories he composed an opera for the coronation of Empress Maria Theresa, several school operas and some instrumental works.

Sehling was a very prolific composer of sacred music, namely arias, masses, requiems, motets and offertoria. Manuscript copies of his works are scattered throughout libraries, among others, in Nymburk, Roudnice nad Labem, Broumov, St. Vitus cathedral, and in the monastery of the Elizabethans. He was possibly associated with Christoph Willibald Gluck.

Among his pupils were the soprano Johann Christian Preissler from Polevsko and the Premonstratensian Johann Oelschlegel (1724-1788), choir rector in Strahov Monastery, organ builder and composer.
