SCHATZ, NATHANAEL (b. 1997)

Nathanael  Schatz was born June 3, 1997 at Albuquerque, New Mexico. The family moved to Dubuque, Iowa, in 1999 where he started playing piano at the age of 6 and has been in love with music ever since. He grew up listening to his parents play music at church and often came to their rehearsals. His father, in addition to being a worship leader, was an All-State trombonist in high school while his mother played flute and bass guitar  and sang at church as well.
 
Nate picked up both the guitar and trumpet at age 10 and began composing at age 13. Since then, he has won various awards in both the trumpet and composition fields. He was the 2013 and 2014 winner of the Iowa Composer’s Forum High School Division Composition Competition and also received a Maddy Summer Artist award from Interlochen Arts Camp in 2014 and the 2015 Fanfare Competition award.
 
His music has been performed by many ensembles, including the World Youth Wind Symphony, the Stephen Hempstead High School Orchestra, and the Rose Ensemble. Nathanael has studied composition with Tracey Rush, Michael Gilbertson, Dr. Robert J. Brownlow, Dr. Robert Deemer, Dr. N. Lincoln Hanks, and Dr. Shawn Okpebholo.
