SACCHINI, LOUIS (b. 1930)

Louis Sacchini (b. August 30, 1938) received a Bachelor of Music in Clarinet Performance from Union University, a Master of Music in Clarinet Performance from the University of North Texas (formerly North Texas State University) and a Master of Fine Arts in Clarinet Performance and a Doctorate of Philosophy from the University of Iowa. He has taken additional studies at Duquesne University, the University of St. Louis, Illinois State University, and Boston University. His clarinet teachers include Theodore Ruta and Bernard Cerilli (Pittsburgh Symphony), Gino Cioffi (Boston Symhony), Oscar Lee Gibson, and Himie Voxman. He also has studied flute with Goerge Morey, oboe with Noah Knepper, and bassoon with Ronald Tyre.

 

In addition to teaching woodwind performance, Dr. Sacchini has taught Music History, Music Literature, Music Theory Conducting, Form and Analysis, Music Appreciation, Woodwind Pedagogy and Basic Improvisation. During the last half of his thirty years of collegiate teaching, he served as chairman of music departments in North Dakota and Wisconsin and as faculty advisor to the music fraternities of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia and Mu Phi Epsilon. He was elected by his colleagues to every office of the college faculty senate, including the presidency. Dr. Sacchini served as musical director and conductor for the Northern Plains Wind Symphony, a semi-professional wind ensemble he established from 1978-1982. Since 1978, he has also served on the faculty of the International Music Camp and adjudicated in many mid-western, mid-southern, north-central states and Canadian provinces. He has been selected on numerous occasions to adjudicate the Kinsmans International Band Festival. He has also served as a state chairman for the International Clarinet Society and for the Saxophone Congress. Since 1995, Dr. Sacchini is retired in Platteville, Wisconsin, and keeps an active involvement with music through teaching and performing with the Dubuque Chamber Winds.
