| Ballard, William J. - 1922 - 2006 |
| |
| Choral Music Director and Musicologist, William J Ballard received a Fulbright Grant for study in Florence, Italy, from 1952-53. At this time, the manuscript of Orazio (Horatio) Vecchis Madrigal Comedy, LAmfiparnaso, drew his committed attention. This vocal work for 6 a cappella voices for three acts and many scenes is a 40-minute work. Ballard diligently went to work transcribing it from manuscript, translating the Italian dialects into English, and then prepared The Tudor Singers, a professional ensemble, to perform and record it. Luckily for the music world, this taped recording after 50 years has been able to be restored and digitally re-mastered to accompany the first time publication of the score by Alliance Publications, Inc. Ballard received his musical training from Chicago Musical College in Voice (B. Mus.) and Theory (M. Mus) and Northwestern University in Music History and Literature (Ph.D). His experience as a Director of Choral Activities have been extensive. He served as Director of Choral Organizations and Asst. Prof. of Choral Literature at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, from 1954-1970, was Head of the Music Department and Director of Sixth Form Studies at Ely High School, Ely, Cambridge, England, and from 1970-71, Director of the Centenary College Choir and Associate Prof. of Music History and Conducting at Centenary College of Louisiana from 1972-74. Following this he was the Music Director of the San Francisco Boys Chorus from 1974-85 and then formed a new choir, The Singing Boys of San Francisco Bay, in 1985-1988. During these years, he also served churches as Director of Music in Waukegan, Chicago, Evanton, and Glencoe, Illinois, and founded The Tudor Singers (1946-1970), a professional ensemble and directed community choral organizations as well the Commonwealth Edison Choraliers (1954-64) and the Elgin Choral Union (1962-70). Dr. Ballards assiduous study has produced editions of early music for modern performance of 6 major works by Italian mastersVecchi, Banchieri, Striggio, Gagliano, Monteverdi, Janequin and Marenzio, four of which have also been translated for singing in English. Published articles may be found in The Choral Review, The School Musician, and Choristers Guild Letters. | BELCKE, FRIEDRICH - 1795-1874 |
| |
| Friedrich August Belcke (1795-1874), regarded as the first traveling trombone virtuoso, was the son of the Town Musician of Lucka (a small village between Leipzig and Altenburg) who, at an early age, showed a great fondness for brass instruments. Before studying the trombone, he became a proficient horn player. In 1817, Weber brought him to Dresden, and in 1821, he played solos on Stozel's newly invented tenor horn in Berlin and later in Leipzig. Frequent tours made him widely known as the trombone virtuoso. His father, Christian Godfried Belcke (1767-1838), bassoonist and flutist, was the Town Musician in Lucka for thirty-six years until his death. Friedrich was the pupil of his father and of Sachse, the Town Musician of Altenburg whose successor he became in 1811-1815. Friedrich joined the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra in 1815 and then obtained a permanent post in the Royal Orchestra in Berlin, where he remained from 1816 to 1858 until his retirement at the age of 63. Upon retiring from the Berlin Royal Orchestra, he traveled extensively as a trombone virtuoso with his brother, Christian Gottlieb Belcke (1796-1875), flutist, who in 1841 had already become a pensioner from the Chamber Orchestra in Altenburg. He had played with them from 1834-1841. Prior to that, he too, was with the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig from 1819-1832, a shorter period than Friedrich whose tenure with them was forty-three years. One can only imagine the enjoyment these two musicians had traveling around making music in their golden years. Both brothers are known for having composed many good compositions for their respective instruments. CONCERT DUETS (Suite for Trombones) arr. Joel Blahnik AP-348 Bass Clef $15. | BELOHOUBEK, KAREL - 1942 |
| |
Karel Belohoubek (bn December 29, 1942 in Zarosice, Moravia, in the Czech Republic), early in his life decided to devote himself to military music. He studied bassoon and clarinet at the Military College of Music in Roudnice nad Labem and was then active in the Garrison Band in Stribro. From 1961, he was the solo bassoonist with the Prague Garrison Band and later with the Czechoslovak Central Army Band. At the Prague Conservatory, he continued bassoon study with Professor Pivonka and conducting with Professor Cizek. His wrote his thesis on The Slavonic Dances of Antonin Dvorak and their Instrumentation for a Wind Orchestra. In 1978, Karel Belohoubek became a conductor of the Central Army Band of the Czech Republic and in 1987 its Chief Conductor.
Ever since his student years, he has been interested in instrumentation and has devoted himself intensively to improving his skill in making arrangements and composing. Of the well-known concert music he has orchestrated are the Overture to the Bartered Bride by Bedrich Smetana, Ravels Bolero, and the Symphonic Dances from Bernsteins West Side Story. His works are frequently performed at brass band concerts in the Czech Republic as well as in other countries. As conductor, he has made many concert band recordings for the radio and recording companies. His compositions appear on programs of many world-famous wind ensembles.
While principal conductor of the Czech Central Army Band from 1987 until 1999, Belohoubek increased its repertoire substantially and took part in its many successful tours to foreign countries. With this magnificent symphonic wind band, he performed annually at the internationally renowned Prague Spring Music Festival held in May. Under hisguidance, ever new and different composers and harmonizations have gained acceptance into the repertoire for concert winds. Since 2000, he continues to be a freelance composer and director enjoying the opportunity of guest conducting in many countries. |

Marilyns professional positions include being Region VI Coordinator for Professional Concerns for the American Guild of Organists and being Director of the AGO National Young Artists Competition in Organ Performance. Her music/texts are published by Oregon Catholic Press, GIA, MorningStar and Alliance Publications, Inc.
Gentle Grace is a work for a cappella choir written by Marilyn Biery which is compelling and beautifully expressive. It utilizes one of her favorite Early American tunes, TENDER THOUGHT. Composed and written from the heart, it is a text which needs to be felt to be authentic and musically convincing. The change in ms. 43 to duple-meter surges with dancelike feelings and brings joy and confidence filled with hopea buoyancy to anyones spirit. |

| BLACKWELL, MARY EDWARD - 1887-1997 |
| |
Marion Blackwell was born in 1887 in the city of Milwaukee, WI, the daughter of Thomas and Julia Britt Blackwell. Her musical interests began at the age of 6 when she started piano lessons with her sister Alice. When she graduated from St. Johns Academy in Milwaukee, she entered religious life at Sinsinawa, WI, and made profession as a Dominican Sister in 1907, taking the name Mary Edward. Her first teaching of music was in schools staffed by the Dominican Sisters in Peoria and Bloomington, Illinois. She was among the first Sisters to teach music at Rosary College, River Forest, IL, when it opened in 1922.
On weekends she went into Chicago to study under Professor Videk at the American Conservatory in Chicago. After fourteen years, she was the first woman and first religious sister to receive degrees in music and music theory. Her work was highly esteemed at this time and from 1921-1931, a number of her compositions were published by the Clayton F. Summy and Boston Music companies.
At this time, the head of the American Conservatory sent some of her manuscripts to Ottorino Respighi in Rome. Under his tutelage she was the recipient of the American Scholarship for a 3-year study of orchestration and symphonic composition in Rome (1933-36). Respighi, a master linguist, also, who spoke 14 languages, assessed her work as very, very sensitive.
Along with four male students, Sister Edward , at the age of 46, was among Respighis private students meeting in his home three days each week. (She met Horowitz during this residency and noted his eccentricity). Respighi invited her to conduct in her white costume (Dominican Sisters wore white habits and black veils), but Sister Edward declined the invitation, feeling not fully qualified. When Respighi died in 1936, Nadia Boulanger, aware of Sister Edward as one of his students, invited Sister to join her Studio in Paris at the Ecole Normale de Musique. Through Boulanger, Sister Edward met Igor Stravinsky who invited her to join his 5 male students who dined with him every noon and developed a life-long friendship. Later, Stravinskys son, Soulima, maintained their friendship til the time of Sisters death at Sinsinawa in 1987.
Sister Edward was a faculty member at Rosary College (1923-32,1936-41) and Edgewood College in Madison (1943-1950). In 1944, she hosted Stravinsky for a presentation entitled Composing, Performing, Listening. Mermbers of the Madison Pro Arte Quartet participated in his presentation. It is said that Stravinsky asked her to conduct the Chicago Symphony but she declined, preferring to sit with Mrs. Rockefeller, Sr. in her box.
From 1941 until 1944 while Nadia taught at Radcliffe, Harvard, Indiana University, or Stanford during the academic year, she came to Sinsinawa Mound each summer to teach music to the Sisters.
Sister Mary Edward was a woman with a unique charisma as well as a very artistic temperament. Stravinsky indicated that she had made a great impact upon the spiritual life of Nadia Boulanger. By her forthrightness, she had reached her and Nadia chose to return to the Church after an absence of 35 years. From then on, no matter where Nadia was in the world, she wrote to Sister Edward every 3 weeks up until her own death in 1979.
Sister Edward came to teach and live at Sinsinawa Mound in 1950. This 63-year old Sister traveled extensively for at least 10 years, giving Fine Arts lectures in high schools staffed by the Sinsinawa Dominicans. She was able to hold a class spell-bound by her poetic and philosophical insights, gleaned from her deep acquaintance with the humanities. One such statement was: We face death with none of our business accomplished, for living is distraction disguised as important actions. She died at the age of 100 on January 7, 1987, and is buried in the Sinsinawa Mound Cemetery.
Mary Edward Blackwells music needs no apologiesit stands firmly on its own merits as being unique during an era when the music compositional world was male-dominated. This fact may also give a partial explanation for the unique relationship of Sister Edward with Nadia Boulanger. It is a distinct honor for Alliance Publications, Inc., with its publishing studio at Sinsinawa, to bring to light the music of this talented composer and teacher. We look forward to bringing other compositions of this eccentric, totally artistic woman, into print. In conjunction with this publication, we enclose a few poems of hers. As we move from one generation to another, the legacy of Sister Mary Edward Blackwell is being transmitted by one of her grateful piano students, Anita Smisek, O.P., Co-Founder and Editor of Alliance Publications, Inc., and Sinsinawa Studios Productions. |

| BOCCHERINI, LUIGI - 1743-1805 |
| |
Luigi Boccherini , born in Lucca, Feb 19, 1743 and died in Madrid on May 28, 1805, was an Italian composer and cellist, born into a family of much artistic talent. He was a prolific composer, particularly of chamber music, with a distinctive and highly wrought style, and is the chief representative of Latin instrumental music during the Viennese Classical period. He and his father, Leopold, a cellist and bassist, were summoned by imperial courts and wealthy patrons in Vienna, Paris, Italy, Germany, and Spain during the course of their lives as composers in residence. During the 1770s which were a period of security and steady activity for Boccherini, he composed many string quintetsover 100. It is one of these, chosen from a collection of Sei Quintetti, that is the source of this transcription for saxophone quintet. Syncopated rhythms are an important mark of his style often appearing in an inner part to maintain the vitality of an accompaniment or simply to enliven a texture. They are closely allied to Boccherinis highly individual manner of phrasing, with slurs from a weak beat to a strong, which by depriving a line of direct accentuation lends a certain softness and suavity to its melodic contours. Thus the use of dolce in his music is common. The pervading charm and gentleness of his music is wel contrasted by brief, explosive fortissimo passages. His melodic style is characterized by repetition of short phrases, the use of triadic or scalic figures, the symmetry of rthythmic structure, and above all , the delicate detail, with finely moulded lines elaborated with trills or appogiaturas. This was a composer of uncommon ingenuity and enterprise in the handling of musical materials. |

| BODOROVA, SYLVIE - 1954 |
| |
Sylvie Bodorova (born 1954) studied composition at the Janacek Academy in Brno and also at the Music Academy in Prague as a post-graduate. She continued her studies in Gdansk and Siena (with Professor Franco Donatoni at the Academia Chigiana) and from 1987 she regularly attended Professor Ton de Leuws composition courses in Amsterdam.
She taught at the Janacek Academy in Brno and, in the 90s, at the CCM in Cincinnati, Ohio as Composer in Residence from 1994-95 and 1995-96.
Since the early 80s, her works have been performed on all the continents, even in the Antarctic where her Homage to Columbus for guitar was heard in 1997. She has received several competition prizes (Mannheim, Czech Radio Prague) and many prestigious commissions, the latest from the Warwick Festival Terezin Ghetto Requiem - Kampa Quartet - 1998, Ama me for Baritone and Piano - 1999, from Buenos Aires for Concierto de Estío for Guitar and Orchestra 1999, Saturnalia for Orchestra, Bochum, 1999. Laugaricio is the Latin name of a town in Slovakia of the contemporary city of Trencin. It was one of the most northern Roman fortresses behind the Limes Romanus which means behind Danube. The Roman soldiers made a very big inscription on a rock there in the second century. It has remained to this day with the words describing the Roman situation and the number of roman army etc. If you visit Slovakia, you can see it for yourself. This is probably one of the most important memorials and witness of Roman influence in the teritory of Slovakia at the beginning of the first millenium.
