BOUMAN, PAUL (b. 1918)

While he was an organist and choir director, he maintained an active life in professional organizations AGO, ACDA, ALCM, and Hymn Society of America and actively contributed his leadership and gifts to staffing Lutheran worship conferences and workshops for children's choirs. Throughout his life, composer Bouman created choral and organ compositions which have been published by Concordia, Augsburg, Boosey & Hawkes, GIA, MorningStar, Selah Music, Earthsongs, and Choristers Guild.
"Tenderly Mary Sings to Sleep" is a mixed choir and organ arrangement created during the summer of 1998 of a beloved Czech Christmas carol, "Chtíc aby spal." J. Michael Thompson requested it from Bouman for a CD recording published by Liturgical Press, Collegeville, Minnesota, Light from the East: Carols from Central and Eastern Europe which was performed by the Schola Cantorum of St. Peter's in the Loop, Chicago, under his direction. The tune was written by 17th century South Bohemian church musician, Adam Václav Michna, and is one of the most famous carols of the Czech people. Its English text was taken from the Give Glory hymnal of new hymns from Czech sources edited and compiled by Anita Smisek published by Alliance Publications (AP-00118).
