BLAHUNEK, VÁCLAV
Václav Blahunek, Ph.D. (born 23 April, 1971, Olomouc) is a contemporary Czech conductor, musician and music theorist. Since 2009, he has been the Chief Conductor and Director of the Music Guard and the Police of the Czech Republic (a member of the Police of the Czech Republic).
He graduated from the Music Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, Clarinet (Petr Čáp) and conducting (Radomil Eliška, Josef Kuchinka, Jiří Chvála, František Vajnar, Pavel Pokorný, Leoš Svárovský and Lubomír Mátl). In 2010, he completed his doctoral studies at the same faculty in the field of interpretation and theory of interpretation, specializing in conducting with a focus on the symphonic repertoire of the Symphonic Orchestra. The topic of his dissertation was the Symphonic Wind Orchestra in the reflection of the Czech works of the second half of the 20th century.
He participated in the conducting courses of Jiří Bělohlávek and Nicholas Pasquet in Prague and Craig Kirchoff at the University of Appleton, USA.
Blahunek cooperates with a number of domestic and foreign musical ensembles, including the Prague Symphony Orchestra. Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, Jan Neruda High School Symphony Orchestra, Pardubice Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra, Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic Orchestra from Zlín, Hradec Králové Philharmonic Orchestra, Northern Illinois University Symphony Orchestra in Chicago and brass music in De Kalb and Dubuque in the USA. He was a guest at the Prague State Opera and the theater in Ústí nad Labem.
He has been a conductor at the Music Guard since 1999. In 2009 he was appointed Chief Executive Officer and Director of this body. In his practice, he emphasizes the performance of original compositions by Czech and foreign authors.
