BEYENKA, BARBARA (1911-2006)

Barbara Beyenka, OP was born on April 20, 1911, in Houghton, Michigan, the oldest child of six born to Thomas John Beyenka and Leona Poull Beyenka and she died on May 5, 2006 at St. Dominic Villa, Sinsinawa, Wisconsin. She joined the Dominican Order and received the habit on March 7, 1934. A graduate of Rosary College, she earned her Ph.D in Latin from Catholic University of America. She translated St. Ambrose Letters for the Fathers of the Church in 1954. Sister Barbara taught high school, college and later was appointed Academic Dean at Edgewood College, Madison, Wisconsin. Among other works, she wrote Sea Scribe and Other Poems.
